Description:Recent developments in methods for improving foundry working conditions by controlling the dust levels, noise, and other factors occurring during the cleaning and finishing of castings in Swedish foundries were reviewed and evaluated. The major development was the introduction of mechanized manipulators and robots which keep the worker away from the immediate vicinity of the casting cleaning and finishing operations. Problems frequently encountered in the cleaning room were outlined and preventive measures and countermeasures were reviewed. Tests performed with robots for grinding and pneumatic chipping proved to be satisfactory and a rigid robot has been installed and used in production cleaning operations. Testing of shear pressing techniques for use in the removal of flash in a press, a method commonly used for the cleaning of die castings, revealed that significant reduction of both dust and noise levels were achieved with this particular equipment. Brief mention was made of the use of manual hydraulic grinders for the cleaning of castings, as well as the development of casting fixtures for the efficient handling of castings during cleaning. Guidelines for the use of ventilated work enclosures during the cleaning and finishing of castings were presented.
