Pelton Casteel's new cleaning room.

  The new cleaning and finishing facility at the Pelton Casteel foundry was described. The new installation was designed to reduce the exposure of workers to silica (14808607) dust and metal fumes to levels lower than the allowable limits, using ventilated encapsulating booths which had partial seals across the openings and were acoustically lined. Use of the new booths resulted in reduction of the noise levels outside the booths to below 90 decibels-A. To conserve energy in the winter, provisions were made to filter and recirculate the exhaust from the abrasive grinding operation with provisions made to discontinue recirculation automatically with an opacity monitor on occurrence of abnormal conditions. Details were presented regarding safety and material handling considerations, exposure sampling test results, general exhaust ventilation, and noise measurements. To improve working conditions, the facility was divided into sections according to the size of the casting being processed; casts weighing up to 22 kilograms were scheduled in a smaller area and larger castings were processed in a large area. Personal sampling data demonstrated the effectiveness of the new design in maintaining exposures to dust, iron-oxide (1309371), and copper (7440508) at less than the permissible exposure limits.
