The U.S. population-at-risk to occupational respiratory diseases.

  A table for the assessment of the population at risk for respiratory disease attributable to various occupational exposures is presented. The table relates the toxic agents and their related diseases with the involved occupations. The number of workers in these occupations potentially at risk due to exposure to the offending agents is estimated. The ranking is based on the number of persons exposed. The author notes that the population at risk estimate was developed as an approximation of the number of workers working in close association with a toxic agent and not as an approximation of the number of probable cases of disease. The estimates were taken from the NIOSH criteria documents, the National Occupational Hazard Survey, census data and disease prevalence reports. The author concludes that the value of the estimates is in determining where in the work force the toxic agents appear and in calculating the numbers of workers who may be exposed to hazardous agents.
