  The Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) and the NIOSHTIC system were briefly described. At the time the paper was presented some 38000 toxic substances were on the RTECS list. The list included the information on carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, mutagenicity and primary skin and eye irritation of various substances. The in-vitro Ames test data were also made available. The bioassay program and all testing phases of carcinogenicity had been filed. The document repository also contained the monographs on cancer by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Approximately 3700 reviews were cited, including all the citations to the original literature. With the help of cross referencing, the NIOSH agency could identify chemical compounds under various names. RTECS was available on microfilm that was automatically mailed to all Government Printing Office paper copy subscribers. The computerized online file had been made available at the National Library of Medicine. The National Institute of Health, Environmental Protection Agency, and Chemical Information System had RTECS online. NIOSHTIC had approximately 70000 references, some of which contained data on health hazard evaluation reports. The data base extended back to 1900 and was specific to occupational health. The system allowed free text search with a controllable vocabulary. References to specific industries were numerous. NIOSHTIC also contained data from the International Labor Office and the Chemical Information Service of the International Labor Organization. Searches of NIOSHTIC were available through the Clearinghouse for Occupational Safety and Health Information. The files included data on toxicity and occupational health bibliographic references. The agency solicited any information that might be of value to the occupational health community.
