  The immediate effects of the threat of bone necrosis on diving contractors were considered by one individual who was president of a large diving company. The widespread lack of knowledge concerning the occurrence of this disease among divers was acknowledged. As more will become known about the conditions, one obvious concern was an increase in insurance rates which will make it impossible for many companies to compete for contracts. There may also be a problem in getting insurance at all. An assigned risk program may be the answer, which carries with it a limit as to the sums of money provided for protection. In order to protect themselves from lawsuits, the companies must be able to show they were not negligent. Use of various types of decompression schedules was discussed in terms of potential company liability.
