Description:A survey of technology for controlling exposure to dusts during loading of bulk dry materials was conducted at Alchem/Tron (SIC- 4953), Cleveland, Ohio in December, 1985. The process of loading lime into open and closed containers on trucks and railroads cars was evaluated. Engineering controls used during loading included a loading spout and a cover to fit over the front end loader's bucket. The loading station beneath the storage silo consisted of a three sided enclosure for the loading spout and bucket of the front loader. Loading was a one person operation and was done infrequently. No buckets were filled during the survey; however, spilled lime was observed on the ground within the enclosure. No data on dust concentrations was available. Personal protective equipment included hard hats, safety glasses or goggles, and dust masks. Respirators were also available. The author notes that the dust control and loading system substantially controls dust exposures. Due to the infrequent and irregular use of the loading spout and the potential hazard at the station being a nuisance dust, this operation is not recommended for an in depth survey.
