Description:Health hazard control methods, work processes, and existing control technologies used in the manufacture of brick products were evaluated at Whitacre Greer Fireproofing Company (SIC-3251), Waynesboro, Ohio in September, 1982. The company employed 66 workers involved in the production of brick pavers, face brick, acid brick, and refractory brick from locally mined clays. Raw clays, shale, and salvaged brick waste were crushed and ground to a 7 mesh particle size. The finely ground material was blended with water, extruded, and cut into slugs. The slugs were pressed into shapes using hydraulic presses. The shapes were palletized, fired, then ground into the final product which was stored or shipped to the consumer. A union management committee held periodic safety meetings in combination with grievance meetings. All workers were given head protectors, and disposable face masks were available for employees who wished to use them. Minimal local exhaust ventilation was provided in the grinding area. The author does not recommend an in depth study of this company since no unique state of the art control technologies are used.
