Preliminary survey report: control technology for manual transfer of chemical powders at Hobart Corporation, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.

  Health hazard control methods, work processes and existing control technologies used during the manual transfer of chemical powders were evaluated at Hobart Corporation (SIC-3639), Mount Sterling, Kentucky in June, 1984. The company employed 750 workers involved in porcelain formulation from frit, silica (14808607), titanium- dioxide (13463677), clay, sodium-nitrite (7632000), potassium- carbonate (584087), and magnesium-carbonate (546930). Dry materials were delivered in bags and dumped in an opening in the ventilated hopper. The material flowed by gravity to a ball mill. Small amounts of dry material were sometimes removed from a storage container, weighed, and added to the hopper. The materials were ground to production specifications in the ball mill and transferred to other production operations. Local and general exhaust ventilation was provided along with safety glass, respirators, face shields, rubber aprons, ear protectors, and gloves. Workers received job training, and health and safety information was provided. Employees were given preemployment physicals, and annual hearing and respiratory examinations. Periodic dust sampling was performed. The author does not recommend an in depth study of control technology at this company since no unique controls are in effect.
