Preliminary survey report: control technology for manual transfer of chemical powders at Porter Paint Company, Louisville, Kentucky.

  Health hazard control measures, work processes, and existing controls were evaluated at Porter Paint Company (SIC-2851), Louisville, Kentucky in May, 1984. The company employed about 200 workers in the production of paints and coatings used primarily in industrial and marine construction and maintenance. The main dry ingredients used in the paints and coatings were titanium-dioxide (13463677), silica (7631869), clay, zinc (7440666), and lead (7439921). Liquids and solids were mixed together so that solids were thoroughly dispersed. The solids were manually added to vats of liquid by dumping bags or containers of the material into the vats. Local and general exhaust ventilation was used to remove or dilute potential air contaminants, but the ventilation systems were not designed to American Conference of Governmental Hygienists specifications. Initial and periodic job training was provided, and workers were encouraged to use good work practices. Workers were given preemployment examinations, and periodic environmental sampling was conducted. Safety glasses and respirators were provided for use in designated areas. The author does not recommend an in depth study of this company since no unique exposure controls are used.
