Description:Health hazard controls used in lead (7439921) ore beneficiation operations were surveyed at the Amax Buick mill (SIC-1031), Buick, Missouri in February, 1982. The company used a lead flotation process and employed 50 workers in the mill. An average of about 7,500 tons of ore, containing 9 percent lead, were processed each day. Work processes and controls were evaluated, and personal and area air samples were collected for lead, carbon-disulfide (75150), and cyanide (57125). Average personal exposures were 0.117 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3) for lead, 1.41mg/m3 for carbon- disulfide, and 0.007mg/m3 for cyanide. Area concentrations averaged for carbon-disulfide. The widened rougher flotation cell launders were not effective in reducing the generation of lead containing mists. The recleaner flotation cell launder covers were moderately effective in reducing mist escape into the general work area. The use of water spikes in the reagent handling area was effective in reducing employee exposures to cyanide and carbon-disulfide. Lead exposures were effectively reduced by the use of an isolated, enclosed, air conditioned flotation cell control room.
