Preliminary survey report: control technology for the ceramic industry at Oklahoma Brick Corporation, Muskogee, Oklahoma.

  Health hazard control methods, work processes, and existing control technologies used in the manufacture of bricks were evaluated at Oklahoma Brick Corporation (SIC-0325), Muskogee, Oklahoma in June, 1983. The company employed about 75 workers involved in the production of structural brick from clay, shale and aggregate or grog. Potential exposures to silica (7631869) existed because the clays contained about 20 percent quartz. Raw materials were crushed and finely ground, and the entire process was automated from the time the material was dumped into the tipple until it was received in the production building surge bins. The raw material storage area, clay preparation building, and reclaimer building were isolated from the production building, and only three workers were needed to perform the crushing and grinding operation. Removable covers were used at all material transfer points, and a water spray mist was used at one strategic transfer point in the conveyor line. A totally enclosed air conditioned control room was provided for monitoring. Head and eye protection was required. The author does not recommend an in depth study of control technology at this company.
