  An in depth survey of dust exposure during weigh out and transfer of powdered materials from bags or bins to smaller containers was conducted at BF Goodrich Company (SIC-2822), Akron, Ohio in October, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate sources of worker dust exposure. Engineering controls consisted of two ventilated booths that were intended to capture whatever dusts were generated during weigh out and transfer activities. Airflow into the booths averaged 100 to 200 feet per minute. Much of the dust generated during weigh out and transfer operations was controlled by the booths. Background personal respirable dust concentrations were below 2 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3). During weighing activities, however, dust concentrations increased, peaking at 40mg/m3, suggesting an average respirable dust exposure of 15 to 20mg/m3. Faulty work practices such as spilling powder, slamming bags of powder onto work surfaces, wearing dirty clothing, and a worker inserting the upper half of his body into the booth hood were observed. The author concludes that although the booths control some dust generated during weigh out and transfer operations, worker dust exposure is still significantly elevated. Exposures could be reduced by correcting improper work practices.
