Description:A walk through survey was conducted at Uniroyal, Incorporated (SIC- 2822), Painesville, Ohio in July, 1985. The purpose of the study was to obtain information on the nitrile rubber production process and to evaluate the potential for exposure to 1,3-butadiene (106990). Bulk samples of Paracril and Paracril/OZO, the major products, were analyzed for residual 1,3-butadiene. The facility produced 26 types of nitrile rubber blends by the emulsion polymerization process. Engineering controls included process pumps fitted with mechanical seals, an air compressor and factory/wide distribution system supplying breathable air, a fixed point monitoring system consisting of on line gas chromatographs and alarm system, local exhaust systems on process equipment, and a recovery system for unreacted 1,3-butadiene. No 1,3-butadiene was detected in the bulk samples. Company air monitoring data for 10 job categories showed time weighted average 1,3-butadiene exposures of for job categories such as reactor and stripper operators. The authors conclude that the facility is suitable for an in depth survey. Closed loop systems should be installed for sampling rail tank cars. [Description provided by NIOSH]
