Description:A walkthrough survey at Nalco Chemical Company (SIC-2869, SIC-2899), Garyville, Louisiana was conducted in March, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to examine the acrylamide (79061) production process as part of an industrywide acrylamide exposure study conducted by NIOSH. Acrylamide was produced within a closed reactor system by the catalytic hydration of acrylonitrile (107131). The product was a solution containing approximately 50 percent acrylamide. Acrylamide powder was not produced at the facility. Approximately 98 percent of the product was used to produce polyacrylamides and copolymers. Engineering controls consisted of an acrylonitrile monitoring system, local exhaust hoods at collection sites for grab samples, and personal protective equipment. There were 90 production employees. Of these, 40 had some contact with acrylamide. Personnel records of current employees and those terminated within the past 2 years were kept on site. Company air sampling data showed acrylamide exposures averaging 0.081 milligram per cubic meter (mg/m3) since July, 1982. The OSHA standard for acrylamide is 0.3mg/m3. The author concludes that the facility should be included in the industrywide study. He recommends more extensive environmental and personal monitoring for acrylamide exposure.
