Description:A walk through survey of control technology for reducing exposure during asbestos (1332214) removal (SIC-1799) at Tidewater Park Elementary School, Norfolk, Virginia was conducted in July, 1984. The project involved removing the asbestos coated vaulted ceiling of the cafetorium. The ceiling contained 17 percent chrysotile (12001295). Engineering controls consisted of using the containment barrier control method recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for asbestos removal and a negative air exhaust system to control emissions. A special system, designed by the contractor, for reducing contamination from falling debris and providing clean air for the workers at the ceiling level was in place. Clearing monitoring was performed by analyzing samples collected on cellulose ester or nucleopore filters by phase control or scanning electron microscopy. Workers wore powered air purifying respirators during initial removal activity. During initial site preparation and later phases of removal, workers wore disposable coveralls and half face cartridge respirators. A walk through decontaminations trailer with showers was located at the entrance to the enclosure. The author concludes that since the contractor did not use any of the removal technologies of current interest (local ventilation, glove bags or injection wetting), an indepth survey is not warranted.
