Walk-through survey report: control technology for asbestos removal industry at Tarrallton Elementary School, Norfolk, Virginia.

  A walk through survey of control technology for reducing exposure during asbestos (1332214) removal (SIC-1799) at Tarrallton Elementary School, Norfolk, Virginia was conducted in July, 1984. The project involved removal of sprayed on asbestos containing ceilings. Engineering controls consisted of using the containment barrier recommended by EPA guidelines for asbestos removal, and negative air exhaust and wet removal methods to reduce fiber emissions. Interior and exterior monitoring of the project was performed by collecting samples on cellulose ester or nucleopore filters and analysis by phase contrast or scanning electron microscopy. Workers wore powered air purifying respirators during initial removal activity. During initial site preparation and later phases of removal, workers wore disposable coveralls and half face high efficiency cartridge respirators. Walk through decontamination showers were located at the entrance of the enclosure. The author concludes that using powered air purifying respirators during initial removal is a prudent practice. Since the contractor did not use any of the control technologies of current interest (local ventilation, glove bags, or injection wetting), an indepth survey is not warranted.
