Description:A walkthrough survey of Castle, a division of Sybron Corporation (SIC-3842), Rochester, New York, was conducted in May and June, 1984. The survey was part of an industrywide study of mortality associated with occupational exposure to ethylene-oxide (75218). Personnel records and company ethylene-oxide monitoring data were reviewed. Ethylene-oxide was used at the facility between 1955 and 1980 for sterilizing bulk goods and testing for leaks in gas sterilizers. Safety glasses and shoes were required as personal protective equipment. Respirators were required for certain activities such as welding. Respirators were never used in areas where workers may have been exposed to ethylene-oxide. The ethylene- oxide monitoring data was considered invalid due to ambiguities in the analytical procedure. A total of 570 past and present employees were estimated from the personnel records to have had potential exposure to ethylene-oxide. This corresponded to about 7,200 person years for those first exposed before 1978. The authors conclude that personnel records are adequate to determine which workers have potential ethylene-oxide exposures. Since ethylene-oxide has not been used in production processes at the facility since 1979, no further industrial hygiene surveys at the facility are planned as part of the study.
