Description:A walk through survey was conducted to assess control technology at the tetrahydrofuran (109999) (THF) and ethylene-oxide (75218) (EO) production facilities of BASF Wyandotte Corporation (SIC-2869), Geismar, Louisiana, in November 1983. THF was produced by the hydrogenation and catalytic dehydration of 1,4-butynediol (110656). EO was made by the catalytic oxidation of ethylene-glycol (107211). Specific controls investigated were the THF liquid sampling system and the EO pumping system. At the THF facility, a custom built device was used to sample the product stream. After sampling, the device was carried to the laboratory where its contents were analyzed. The device reduced the risk of fire from static electricity, a major hazard according to facility personnel, as well as employee exposure. At the EO facility, a cooling system consisting of a heat exchanger and flush seal liquid was used to cool the mechanical seals in the pumping system. The system reduced the rate of seal failure by 50 percent. EO emissions into ambient air were consequently reduced. The author concludes that the control technology inspected is effective in minimizing health risks. An in depth survey is recommended.
