Description:A walk through survey was conducted at the Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation (SIC-3317) in Sacramento, California, on June 14, 1983. The survey was conducted as part of a pilot study to determine the state of the art of high velocity low volume (HVLV) technology for use in welding applications. Hazards were identified as zinc-oxide (1314132) fumes and fumes from lead (7439921), chromates, and cadmium (7440439). The HVLV system was powered by a 10 horsepower blower rated at 300 cubic feet per minute with exhaust filtered through a bag system. The system was designed to support four welders, with vacuum drops on the wall at each of the four welding stations. Personal protective equipment used included a welding helmet, safety glasses, jacket, safety shoes, and gloves. Examination showed that visible fume emissions at the source were removed by the system; stray emissions were present, but not in the immediate proximity of the welder's breathing zone. The author concludes that the facility was not observed in routine operation. It would be worthwhile to explore the potential of the system if a study of HVLV welding system controls was performed.
