Industrial hygiene survey of Westinghouse Electric Corporation, Bloomington, Indiana.

  A survey to assess techniques to control occupational exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls, organic solvents, soldering and welding fumes, and ozone was conducted at Westinghouse Electric Corporation (SIC-3675), Bloomington, Indiana, in April 1977. The company primarily used local exhaust ventilation and personal protective equipment to minimize employee exposure. Periodic medical examinations were given every 2 years to employees deemed to have been exposed to hazardous chemicals. Analysis of environmental and breathing zone samples showed the concentrations of all substances to be below the OSHA and NIOSH standards except for trichloroethylene (79016) (TCE). Two TCE samples in the degreaser area had concentrations of 289 parts per million (ppm). The OSHA standard for TCE is 100ppm. The local exhaust systems were not always used during soldering operations. The author recommends that local exhaust systems always be used when soldering. Duct openings should be enlarged to improve efficiency. Degreasers in the welding and plating areas where the elevated TCE concentrations were found should be checked for leaks.
