Description:A survey of control technology at the United Technologies Mostek Corporation facility (SIC-3674), Carrollton, Texas, was conducted in December 1981. The facility used engineering controls and work practices to minimize employee exposures. The engineering controls consisted of general and local ventilation systems. Air recirculation was provided by the general ventilation system and laminar flow benches. The ambient air in the fabrication areas was monitored to detect phosphine (7803512) and arsine (7784421). Hydrogen (1333740) was also monitored, the system being set to alarm at hydrogen concentrations of 250 parts per million. Worker exposures to noise, microwave and radio frequency radiation, as well as industrial solvents and etching acids, were also closely monitored. The company had a number of training programs designed to promote worker safety. Periodic medical examinations were given to employees in certain job categories. The authors conclude that the facility has a well controlled work environment. The facility is recommended for detailed survey as the control methods would be of benefit to the industry in general.
