Description:A survey was conducted to assess techniques to control occupational exposure to mercury (7439976) (Hg) at the International Minerals and Chemicals Corporation, Chemicals Group (SIC-2812), Orrington, Maine, in March 1982. Engineering controls and good work practices controlled Hg vapor concentrations to below the OSHA limit of 0.1 milligrams per cubic meter time weighted average. Potential emission sources were eliminated by containing the Hg throughout the manufacturing process and by covering hot Hg with water. Inlet and outlet boxes were provided with local exhausts. The Hg removal system and natural dilution ventilation were effective in minimizing exposure from accidental Hg release. The facility placed a high priority on good housekeeping practices. No visible Hg was seen on the lower floor of the cell room. The author notes that the facility has continued to reduce Hg vapor concentrations in the ambient air since its start up and has continued efforts to develop new control techniques for isolating and reducing worker exposure to Hg.
