Description:A survey was conducted to assess the techniques used to control occupational exposures to mercury (7439976) (Hg) at the North American Philips Lighting Company (SIC-3629), division of Norelco at Lynn, Massachusetts, in April 1982. The use of Hg pills in some of the manufacturing stages was effective in reducing Hg vapor concentrations and contact with liquid Hg. The ventilation systems were found to be operating efficiently. Medical surveillance at the facility was adequate and contingency plans for dealing with high urinary Hg concentrations were in effect. Problem areas included the pill and vertical machine manufacturing areas. Some air samples showed Hg vapor concentrations above the OSHA limit of 0.10 milligrams per cubic meter. In these areas, liquid Hg was found on the floor and equipment. Factory representatives were investigating several cleaning agents for these areas; chloroethane had previously been used. The author concludes that relatively effective controls are in place at the facility. Additional control measures recommended include: improved housekeeping, establishment of a routine personal monitoring program to determine time weighted average exposures to Hg vapor, better orientation of the fresh air ducts, and consideration of the use of Hg pills in the vertical machine manufacturing process.
