  A walk through survey of engineering control technology was conducted at Molycorp, Incorporated, Mountain Pass Operation (SIC- 2819), Mountain Pass, California, on September 29, 1982. The survey was conducted as part of a NIOSH study evaluating measures used to control occupational health hazards in packaging processes for dry chemicals. Control technology observed included. ventilation systems, work practices, and protective equipment. No samples were taken. Exhaust ventilation and screw conveyors were used to reduce dust emissions. All employees were required to have preemployment physicals. The company followed Mine Safety and Health Association safety training programs. Respirators were required in all areas, and in some areas, hard hats, safety glasses, and safety shoes were required. Dry sweeping was used in the packaging areas and dirt haul roads were sprayed with water and a petroleum product to control dust. The authors conclude that the ventilation system is not as effective as it could be. Effective dust control is difficult at the packing operations. An indepth study is not recommended because of the limited effectiveness of the present controls.
