Walk through survey report of the pesticide/herbicide bagging operation, Monsanto Agricultural Products Co., Muscatine, Iowa.

  A control technology study of the bagging operation at the Monsanto Agriculture Products facility (SIC-2879) in Muscatine, Iowa, was performed on June 24, 1981. Bagging operated on a three shift basis involving 30 to 40 technicians working rotating shifts. The facility had a comprehensive industrial hygiene program. Charcoal tube and silica gel sampling were performed 4 times a year while filter sampling and piezobalance sampling were also used. Monthly safety inspections were conducted and new employees were given safety and health training and hazard awareness information. Safety shoes, safety goggles, and hard hats were required equipment. Gloves and rubber suits were furnished upon request. Respirators were furnished upon request or by job task assignment. The author concludes that the bagging operation has features that merit an indepth study. The operation has close supervision, strict industrial hygiene policies, and the company gives close attention to safety and health details. Some of the operations may be successfully adapted for improving worker health and safety in other filling and bagging operations.
