Walk-through survey report: control technology for fermentation processes at Genencor, Inc., Bristol, Pennsylvania.

  A walk through survey of Genencor, Incorporated (SIC-2869), division of the Rohm and Haas Delaware Valley, Incorporated, enzyme operation in Bristol, Pennsylvania was conducted in May 1983. Control techniques included utilizing a closed system for the enzyme production process, local exhaust ventilation, and personal protective equipment. An occupational health and safety program included a corporate/union safety committee and corporate/industrial hygiene audits of the facility every 2 years. The greatest potential for occupational exposure was from particulates in the packaging of dry enzymes. Although local exhaust ventilation was used during the drum filling operation, enzyme dust was present on the surfaces in the room. Although occupational health and safety conditions appeared to be well controlled, the facility did not have current state of the art control technology. The author recommends that changes be made in the medical monitoring program to more clearly focus on possible worker sensitization to the enzymes and that housekeeping in the enzyme packaging and warehouse operations be improved.
