Description:A walk through survey was conducted at Hammond Lead Products, Incorporated (SIC-2816), Hammond, Indiana, in April, 1982 to evaluate lead (7439921) chemical bagging operations as part of a NIOSH study of measures used to control airborne dust in dry chemical bagging and filling operations. Engineering controls at the three bag packer stations included exhaust ventilation around each packer spout and an exhaust hood at the lead-silicate bag weighing station; however, these measures were not sufficient to meet the OSHA lead standard of 50 micrograms per cubic meter. The company instituted comprehensive programs in monitoring, work practices, and personal protective equipment to protect the health of employees. Monitoring programs included periodic physical examinations and blood/lead analyses, area and personal dust sampling, and ventilation system monitoring. Employees were provided with personal protective equipment, including coveralls, disposable gloves, and respirators. Cleanup involved routine wet washing and vacuum sweeping in work areas. The author concludes that the monitoring, work practices, and personal protective equipment show a potential for reducing worker lead exposure until improved engineering controls can be implemented. An in depth study of the bagging area operations is a possibility.
