Walk-through survey report: control technology for fermentation processes at Wyeth Laboratories, Inc., West Chester, Pennsylvania.

  A walk through survey was conducted at Wyeth Laboratories, Incorporated (SIC-2833), West Chester, Pennsylvania in November, 1983. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate the control technology for the fermentation processes. The facility produced penicillin-V (87081) and penicillin-G (61336) using the microbial strain Penicillium-chrysogenum. Engineering controls consisted primarily of enclosing the production process and growth and holding tanks, and transferring batch broth mixtures or concentrated liquid penicillin through a sterilized pipe network. Employee contact with the production processes was minimal except for equipment maintenance or manual broth sample extraction. Most of the large scale process operations were controlled by a central computer system. The company had a pre employment training program to orient new employees with process equipment use, operation, and safety procedures. Medical examinations were available for fermentation and extraction process workers. Safety shoes and glasses and disposable dust respirators were provided. The author concludes that Wyeth has in operation an apparently effective system of control measures.
