  The work of the Psychological Services Unit of the San Jose Police Department in reducing stress among police officers is described. The sources and effects of stress on police officers are discussed briefly. The unit has investigated the validity of pre-employment and post-employment selection standards and has developed pre- employment psychological screening, probationary selection, and field training and evaluation programs. Training is provided on the effects of job stress at all levels of the force, where alternative responses to reduce stress are discussed. Psychotherapy is available for officers with severe emotional difficulties. [Description provided by NIOSH]
