Description:A walk through survey was conducted at Becton Dickinson Company (SIC- 3841), Holdredge, Nebraska in April, 1985. The purpose of the survey was to determine the feasibility of including the facility in an industrywide NIOSH mortality/industrial hygiene study of ethylene- oxide (9010791). The facility produced and sterilized hypodermic needles and syringes with 100 percent ethylene-oxide. The company currently used five 1,000 cubic foot sterilizers. The facility performed industrial hygiene monitoring for ethylene-oxide beginning in 1981. The data showed ethylene-oxide concentrations ranging from nondetectable to 7.9 parts per million. Personnel records were adequate to identify exposed workers, based on job categories. The facility could contribute about 3,463 person/years to the NIOSH study. Annual physical examinations were provided for individuals exposed to ethylene-oxide and for forklift operators. Hearing protection, safety glasses, and safety shoes were provided and required in certain areas of the facility. Sterilizer operators were required to wear Mine Safety Administration (MSA) air purifying respirators while transferring sterilized products. The company had an active employee safety committee. The authors conclude that the facility is eligible for inclusion in the NIOSH study.
