Description:Worker exposures to styrene (100425), acetone (67641), toluene (108883), and methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933) (MEK) were determined at Uniflite (SIC-2865) in Bellingham, Washington on February 2, 1978. The company was under consideration for inclusion in a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupational styrene exposure. Approximately 86 of the workers were assigned to the plasticizing operations that were surveyed. The company maintained a safety and industrial program, and medical services were provided by private physicians, local hospitals, or workers trained in first aid. Styrene concentrations ranged from 8.7 to 161.3 parts per million (ppm), compared with the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 100ppm. Acetone concentrations ranged from 19.0 to 182.6ppm, compared with the PEL of 200ppm MEK concentrations ranged from 25 to 275ppm, compared with the threshold limit value (TLV) of 200ppm. Toluene concentrations in the range of 10 to 195ppm, were below the TLV of 200ppm. The author concludes that if this facility has the personnel information required for a mortality study, it should be included in the NIOSH study.
