In-depth industrial hygiene survey report on styrene exposure at The Bertram Yacht Company, Miami, Florida.

  Worker exposures to styrene (100425) and acetone (67641) were determined at The Bertram Yacht Company (SIC-3732) in Miami, Florida, on February 13 to 15, 1979. The survey was part of a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupational styrene exposure. Approximately 615 of the employees at the facility were assigned to the production area that was surveyed. The company maintained a safety and industrial hygiene program, and medical services were provided by a licensed nurse, employees trained in first aid, and a local clinic. Styrene concentrations ranged from none detected to 121 parts per million (ppm), compared with the OSHA standard of 100ppm. Acetone concentrations ranged from none detected to 288ppm, below the OSHA standard of 1000ppm. The author recommends the initiation of a respiratory program, and the use of impermeable gloves by appropriate personnel. [Description provided by NIOSH]
