Description:Occupational exposure to nitrosamines was studied. Air samples were collected in 37 different manufacturing facilities including the azo dye industry, fish processing industry, fish meal manufacturing, cutting fluid manufacturers and users, and rubber and tanning industries. Nitrosamines in air were analyzed by gas chromatography and high pressure liquid chromatography using the Thermal Energy Analyzer (TEA) as a detector. All industries except fish processing had airborne concentrations of TEA responsive compounds. Concentrations of TEA responsive material were as high as 40 micrograms per cubic meter (micrograms/CuM) in the dye industry. A factory using cutting fluids had air concentrations of 0.08 nanograms per cubic meter of N-nitrosodiethanolamine (1116547). A fish meal factory had air concentrations of 0.06micrograms/CuM N- nitrosodimethylamine (62759) (NDMA). Air concentrations of NDMA in a chrome tannery were 47micrograms/CuM. N-nitrosomorpholine (59892) (NMOR) concentrations in the rubber industry were as high as 250micrograms/CuM. Air samples from a rubber chemical manufacturing facility contained NDMA and N-nitrosodiphenylamine (86306) as well as NMOR. The authors conclude that nitrosamine exposure in a variety of industries may be as large as that in the tire and rubber industry.
