  Industries in which paints and coatings are applied were analyzed to select the most suitable industries and specific sites for indepth industrial hygiene and mortality studies of occupational health hazards. Walk through surveys were conducted in 51 facilities representing 9 industries having painting operations to determine paint usage and exposure, completeness of personnel records, and other basic information. The industries studied were construction and maintenance; auto manufacturing; shipbuilding; wood furniture manufacturing; appliance manufacturing; railroad car manufacturing; aircraft manufacturing and maintenance; metal furniture manufacturing; and bus, truck, farm, and construction machinery manufacturing. Criteria for industry selection for further study included type and volume of resin used; extent of exposure based on the method of application, number of workers exposed, and projected usage; and the availability of a study population. The three industries selected for indepth study were wood furniture finishing, aircraft manufacturing, and construction and maintenance. The planned indepth studies include retrospective cohort mortality, comprehensive industrial hygiene and cross sectional medical studies. The authors conclude that the planned studies will yield additional information about the potential and existing hazards of paint application in the workplace.
