Description:A Hazard Evaluation and Technical Assistance survey was conducted by NIOSH on July 15, 1977, at the Ford Motor Company (SIC-3711), Dearborn Specialty Foundry, North Crankshaft Line, in Dearborn, Michigan. The survey was prompted by a request from the OSHA Detroit Area Office, following the death on July 7, 1977, of a 21 year old crankshaft employee, reportedly of heat stroke. Environmental temperature measurements and physiological studies of other workers employed in the same operation lead to the conclusion that a severe thermal insult to some employees exists on at least certain days. The results indicate that the prevailing heat stress conditions were a contributing factor to the employee's death by heat stroke.
