Cancer in southern Louisiana: progress report of a case-control study of lung, stomach, and pancreas cancer.

  Research to investigate the high incidence of lung, stomach, and pancreas cancer among residents of southern Louisiana is described. Interviews are being conducted with patients with newly diagnosed cases of cancer at three sites and with a matched comparison group to gather information on diet; ethnic background; alcohol consumption; occupational, medical, and residential histories; and related factors. The primary source of cancer cases is pathologists' reports from 22 hospitals in the southern half of Louisiana. The comparison group is being selected from hospital admissions lists on medical records and matched to the cases by age, sex, race, and hospital. The study is expected to include complete interviews of 1200 lung cancer cases, 150 pancreatic cancer cases, and 200 stomach cancer cases and an equal number in the comparison group. Manufacturing industries in the area with over 50 employees have been located and mapped for future determination of the residences of cancer cases and the comparison group.
