Extent of industrial exposure to epichlorohydrin, vinyl fluoride, vinyl bromide and ethylene dibromide.

  Studies of industrial exposure to epichlorohydrin (106898), vinyl- fluoride (75025), vinyl-bromide (593602), and ethylene-dibromide (106934) are summarized. NIOSH recommended sampling and analytical methods were used to conduct industrial hygiene surveys at two epichlorohydrin manufacturing and user facilities and three additional resin manufacturing facilities, at a vinyl-fluoride manufacturing facility and a polymerization facility, at a vinyl- bromide manufacturing facility, and at two ethylene-dibromide manufacturing and two blending facilities. The processes used in each facility, health concerns, measured exposure concentrations, and the control methods are discussed. The importance of closed processing as a primary control method is discussed, and the need for continuing attention to open system processes and equipment maintenance to prevent worker exposure is stressed. The author concludes that exposures to the chemicals in the facilities surveyed generally were within permissible exposure limits.
