Description:The functions and limitations of presence sensing devices are reviewed. A model for the performance of hazard analyses of industrial equipment and the application of the model to identify hazards in the use of presence sensing devices as guards to mechanical power presses are described. Hazards existing without device failure are analyzed, and each factor in the equation used for safety distance calculation is evaluated and its variability determined. Generic failure modes of presence sensing devices are identified, research on device calculations is reviewed, and international safety regulations are compared. Presence sensing device performance criteria are addressed.
