  Worker exposures to sulfuric-acid (7664939) mists were determined at the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation facility (SIC-3312) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on February 28, 1979. The company was under consideration for inclusion in a NIOSH study of the health effects of occupational sulfuric acid exposure. The company employed approximately 5,000 workers. The facility had an established industrial hygiene program and maintained a safety department with a full time physician and a certified industrial hygienist. Personnel records provided demographic information and work histories. Sulfuric acid air samples ranged from 0.039 to 1.2 milligrams per cubic meter. The current OSHA standard is 1.0 milligram per cubic meter. The author concludes that a potential hazard due to sulfuric acid exposure exists, and recommends this site for inclusion in the NIOSH study.
