Talc dust and industrial hygiene survey at Plymouth Rubber Company, Canton, Massachusetts.

  Talc (14807966) exposures at the Plymouth Rubber Company (SIC-3069) in Canton, Massachusetts, was surveyed on April 26 and 27, and May 10, and 11, 1972. Personal and area air samples were collected primarily from the rubber band operation where 100 workers were employed and analyses were conducted to determine asbestos fiber (1332214) content, total dust, and free silica (7631869) (SiO2). Asbestos concentrations exceeded the OSHA standard of 5 fibers greater than 5 microns per cubic centimeter. All samples were above the OSHA standards for total dust and respirable dust concentrations of 6 and 3 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/CuM), respectively. Fibrous talc and free SiO2 content also were in excess of OSHA standards. The authors recommend that a low SiO2 content talc be substituted for the one in present use and that talc be used sparingly. They also recommend improvements in ventilation and hygienic practices.
