  Occupational hazards associated with painting operations in heavy chemical industries were surveyed on October 1, 1979, at Courtney and Company, Industrial Painting Contractors (SIC-1721), in Texas City, Texas. Contract painting operations were reviewed along with personnel records, medical programs, and safety and hygiene programs. The company employed 80 to 125 painters contracted to various worksites. Personnel records were kept for 5 years, and union records contained information on illness and benefit claims. Only medical records that might involve workmen's compensation were maintained by the company, and no systemic medical monitoring program existed. All sandblasting workers were required to wear earplugs and helmets. Standardized safety practices for painting inside tanks or closed vessels were observed. All workers were required to wear half face respirators. The authors note that the health problems of these painters are unique due to frequent exposures to high risk chemicals and exposures in closed spaces. This population is not suitable for risk evaluation since contractor records are inadequate and the population is small. An identified cohort of union members could be used for an industrial hygiene survey.
