Walk-through survey report of the Steel Manufacturing and Alloying Operations at ARMCO Middletown Works, Middletown, Ohio.

  Samples near the point of manganese (7439965) (Mn) addition at the basic oxygen (7782447) furnace were collected during a walk through survey of the steel manufacturing and alloying operation at Armco Middletown Works (SIC-3313), Middletown, Ohio. Airborne concentrations of total and respirable Mn dust were determined. All Mn concentrations evaluated were below the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists and the OSHA standard of 5 milligrams per cubic meter. Personal exposure of workers to Mn is minimal since workers spend little time in the dustier areas of the changing floor. Based on the low levels of airborne Mn observed, and the small number of workers exposed, the authors recommend that this facility be excluded from a NIOSH study of occupational exposure to Mn.
