  A walk through survey of the Todd Pacific Shipyards Corporation (SIC- 1721) in Los Angeles, California was conducted on January 31, 1979 to determine its suitability for inclusion in a NIOSH sponsored investigation of health hazards in the painting trades. There are 72 painters currently employed in this facility. Some abrasive blasting also is done by the painters. Coating materials used at the facility are classified into five categories: epoxy, conventional, zinc, (7440666) antifouling, and thinners. The shipyard's comprehensive safety program includes an extensive respirator program. The investigators recommend the facility as a possible candidate for an industrial hygiene study because a steady high level of painting probably will be done here for a number of years. The facility is not recommended as a site for epidemiological studies due to the difficulty of constructing a valid total population base and a high turnover rate in employment.
