Description:An environmental survey and a medical screening study was conducted by NIOSH to assist BASF Wyandotte in determining the effects of potential exposure to vinylidene-chloride (75354). A medical surveillance of 46 employees, who were potentially exposed to the chemical, had been previously conducted by BASF. Liver function tests, liver scans, dye clearance tests, and liver biopsies were included in the BASF study protocol. Both personal and area environmental samples, gathered by NIOSH, were analyzed by gas chromatography. All 256 workers at the factory were evaluated in the NIOSH medical screening study, which included essentially the same clinical tests used by BASF. It was found that NIOSH could not directly correlate either its test results or the BASF results with worker exposure to vinylidene-chloride since nearly 200 chemical materials were in use at the facility. NIOSH recommends close ongoing medical surveillance for all employees at the BASF plant. [Description provided by NIOSH]
