Hazards and corrective safety practices in the handling, manufacturing, mixing, transportation, storage, and use of Class A, B, and C explosives, and detonating materials are described based on existing regulations, consensus standards, and professional recommendations. Characteristics of combustion, toxicity, proper fire fighting, handling techniques, and hygiene for raw materials in the explosives industry are discussed. Safety Office development, manufacturing site, building design, equipment maintenance and repairs, waste disposal, and personnel practices are considered, and highway, rail, ship, airplane, and underground transport precautions and procedures are given. Construction, separation, and operation of the five types of storage magazines at underground locations, on water, and in motor vehicle terminals are discussed. The American Table of Distances for storage separation is provided. Preparations and safeguards for general, blackpowder, underground, underwater, and excavation under compressed air blasting are reviewed, as well as misfires, post firing inspections, and field mixing problems. Safety training, complete record keeping, and attention to local, state and federal regulations are recommended. A glossary of materials, methods, and conditions is included.
