Safety assessment of petroleum and gas producers.

  Personnel safety hazards in the petroleum (8002059) and gas industries were assessed by computer assisted analysis of data in 1,887 accident reports (1970 to 1977) from 15 sources, including the American Petroleum Institute, OSHA, and the U.S. Geologic Survey. Information on industries involved in the exploration, extraction, processing, and storage of crude oil (8002059), natural gas, and liquefied natural gas (64741486) was considered; information on accidents occurring in transit by vehicle or pipeline was excluded. Findings show that fire related incidents were the most prevalent and that the most detailed incidents reported tended to be low frequency and high severity occurrences. It is recommended that hazards associated with the furnaces and pumps used in the petroleum and gas producing industry be studied, a reporting system comprising accident cause information that is updated at least annually should be instituted, and a system should be developed for the reporting of petroleum industry illness data. In addition to classification by Standard Industrial Classification codes or operational area, injury and illness data also should be classified by occupation and type of trauma or accident. The data file resulting from this study should be maintained and questionnaire and on site safety surveys should be conducted within the industry.
