Description:An analysis of talc (14807966) by X-ray diffraction and polarized light microscopy is reported. One hundred samples of talc from different mines supplied by NIOSH were analyzed using X-ray diffraction and polarized light microscopy. X-ray analysis was performed with nickel filtered copper radiation using line scanning from 4 to 70 degrees 2 theta. The samples were found to consist of from 1% to 99% talc in combination with 23 minerals which are listed along with their X-ray diffraction peak assignments and alternative minerals having similar peak assignments. Refractive indices for 15 minerals as determined by polarized light microscopy are listed. A list of minerals and standards used in the study is presented. Calibration curves determined during step scanning are also included for quartz (14808607), chrysotile (12001295), tremolite (14567738) and anthrophyllite as found in the talc samples.
