Evaluation of human exposure to hand-transmitted vibration.

  Following a consideration of the problems involved in vibration measurement and its prediction of vibration induced white finger, several guidelines for safe exposure limits are evaluated, and weighted vibration level is discussed. Guidelines include Czechoslovakian, Russian and British proposals, which vary widely, and caution is urged in applying them. The most recent set of proposals from the International Standards Organization are summarized, with the notation that they should not be taken too literally due to the lack of good medical and epidemiological data. The draft of the British Standard is assessed as applied to chain saws, grinders and swaging, and pneumatic tools. Areas for further research are considered.
