Description:The design and operation of occupational health programs in governmental agencies are described. The work of NIOSH within the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, OSHA and the Bureau of Labor Statistics within the Department of Labor, and the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Interior is described in some detail. Other federal agencies have authority in some aspects of occupational health. The administration, personnel, budgets, legislation and regulations, functions and activities, status of operating programs, major constraints, factors contributing to the effectiveness of programs, and the impact of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 are discussed as they relate to state programs. In spite of the dispersed responsibilities, the aims are the same, to protect workers and improve their health and working conditions.
