Description:Compressed-air workers may be protected from decompression sickness and dysbaric osteonecrosis by maintaining working pressures below 11 and 17 pounds per square inch gage, respectively. Engineering techniques for achieving these conditions are suggested. Comprehensive preemployment examinations are required to identify and exclude workers with antecedent dysbaric osteonecrosis or coexistent illnesses associated with avascular osteonecrosis. Shorter working hours and longer decompression times are now in use but their effects on dysbarism are inconclusive. Oxygen decompression under conditions favoring isobaric nitrogen elimination, and residence in compressed-air habitats with pressure adjusted to that of the tunnel are suggested.
